 How Capsules Dissolve

The capsule shell, usually made of gelatin or cellulose, begins to break down upon contact with stomach acid and digestive enzymes. This process typically takes a few minutes, allowing the contents to be released.


Drug Release and Absorption

Once the shell dissolves, the medication (in powder, liquid, or pellet form) is released into the stomach or small intestine. The drug molecules then pass through the intestinal wall into the surrounding capillaries.


Reaching the Bloodstream

After crossing the intestinal lining, the drug enters the hepatic portal vein, which carries it to the liver for initial processing. From the liver, the medication is distributed through the general circulatory system to reach its target site.
